Thrill ride between two Rio towers planned

A new thrill ride, a zip line-like attraction called Voodoo Skyline, is expected to open this summer at the Rio. It will connect the resort's two towers.

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
A zip line-like thrill ride will connect the two towers of the Rio and send guests soaring more than 400 feet above the off-Strip hotel-casino.

The attraction, dubbed the Voodoo Skyline, is expected to open later this summer, officials with the project said Wednesday.

Rides will start from the VooDoo Lounge, atop the Rio’s 50-story Masquerade Tower.

Guests will travel 845 feet to the top of the 20-story Ipanema tower, reaching speeds of up to 33 miles per hour. Riders will then make a return trip — upward through a motorized pulley system while traveling backwards at 25 miles an hour — to the starting point.

The total ride covers nearly one-third of a mile and takes 1 minute and 10 seconds from start to finish.

Riders will have 360-degree open-air views of the Strip.

Jonathan Borchetta, a professional photographer who would photograph Las Vegas from the restaurant and nightclub, said the citywide views gave him the idea of a thrill ride. The concept was solidified, he said, when he saw people repelling off the hotel-casino tower for charity.

He and partner Joe Shortal formed New Capital Ventures with Stan Checketts, the creator of more than 200 amusement rides including the Big Shot at Stratosphere.

“It’s going to be different than a typical zip line,” Shortal said. “This type of system is viewed as much safer than a regular zip line because you can’t get hung up.”

Cost to build the attraction is “under $1 million,” Shortal said.

The business is leasing the space for the ride atop the Rio and is expected to employ 35 to 40 full-time workers to operate the system. Caesars Entertainment Corp., which owns the Rio, is sharing in the ride’s proceeds.

Rio Director of Hotel Operations Kevin Donnelly said he was sold on the idea because it was another way for guests to sample the views of Las Vegas offered the VooDoo Lounge facility.

“You can take pictures going one way, and video on the way back,” Donnelly said. “This attraction will please thrillseekers.”

The thrill ride will be open from noon to midnight daily. Cost per ride is expected to be $25 per person in the daytime and $40 in the evenings. Shortal said he hopes the ride will be open by late July or early August.

“There will be some great views for photos,” Borchetta said.

The developers received approvals the Federal Aviation Administration and Clark County to operate VooDoo Skyline.

Zip lines are popping up in Las Vegas.

A currently operating Fremont Street zip line is being replaced by Slotzilla, a 100-foot-tall slot machine-themed structure with two landing pads. One pad is being built near the Fremont, 850 feet from the tower. The line will send riders 75 feet in the air under the world’s largest LED video screen.

The second landing pad is in front of the Golden Gate. The zip lines will hurl riders at speeds of 35 mph, as they lie flat on a harness in a “superhero position” 112 feet off the ground.

The $11 million attraction is on track to open in late June.

Flightlinez Bootleg Canyon in Boulder City offers several zip line experiences.

Last year, MGM Resorts International announced tentative plans for a zip line connecting Luxor and Excalibur over a series of zigzag lines.

More GAY PARTIES happening in Vegas!

Cosmopolitan tops gay party spot expansion

by MIKE PREVATT

Nightlife promoter Eduardo Cordova has been quiet the past year, waiting for the termination of his noncompete agreement with former partner Light Group, and working on ventures outside of the gay party circuit. However, the founder of Revolution Lounge’s long-running Sunday gay night has resurfaced with three huge additions to the men-4-men party scene. He’s already relaunched his nighttime pool party Heaven, now held Fridays at Hard Rock Hotel’s second-level Breathe pool.

On June 12, he’ll start a new, still-unnamed Sunday party at Marquee, which represents both his biggest project yet and the first-ever weekly gay event at a Strip megaclub. Access to all the venue’s bells and whistles will reportedly be at his disposal. “Being able to bring the Marquee experience to the gays, no one else can offer that,” he says. “It’s really exciting for me.” As with Heaven, locals get free entry.

As if that wasn’t enough, Marquee’s host hotel, Cosmopolitan, has recruited him to host a midweek event called Social at Bond, the casino-floor lounge. It’ll take place every Wednesday, also starting in mid-June, when, according to Cordova, patrons can “drink martinis, put a dress shirt on and catch up.”

Cordova won’t be the only gay nightclub magnate with his hands full. His Heaven partner, Kelly Murphy, is the man behind Krave Massive — the pink elephant in the gay nightlife room. Despite headline-making setbacks, the supersized version of the former Miracle Mile Shops dance spot is set to open June 15 at downtown’s Neonopolis complex, just one floor above Murphy’s year-old Drink & Drag bowling bar. Krave 2.0 will vie for the title of world’s biggest gay nightclub.

Murphy is also working to open Boys Lounge, a chic, nonsmoking hangout at the former Sasha’s/Tramps location on Paradise Road. It’s tough to say which new Fruit Loop ultralounge will open first: Boys Lounge, or South Beach Las Vegas, which replaces veteran gay danceteria Gipsy across the street. SBLV is being overhauled as part of the Bar Rescue reality TV show; both venue and series episode are slated for a summer unveiling.

Finally, Club Metro will be the latest LGBT venture to occupy 1000 E. Sahara Ave. The former Crews’N lounge spot — longtime local gays will also remember the space as piano bar Keys in the late 1990s — will transform into a nightclub, featuring mostly EDM music, new lighting and sound systems, food options and bottle service. The 3,000-square-foot venue is slated for a late May/early June opening, upon final permit approval.

STUDY: Gay Men Aren’t Sleeping Around As Much As They Used To

A new study suggests that gay men generally have “significantly fewer” sexual partners than they did 10 years ago.
Comparing data from National Surveys of Family Growth in 2002 and between 2006-10, the study shows a consistent decline in sexual partners across most ethnicities and age groups, particularly men under the age of 24.
Condom use, or rather, the sad lack thereof, remains unchanged.
Key findings include:
* Between 2002 and 2010, the mean number of sexual partners among men who have sex with men (MSM) fell from 2.9 to 2.3
* Among men under 24, 2.9 to 2.1; among men 35-44, 3.0 to 2.2
* Among men with incomes under 150% of the US federal poverty level, 3.0 to 2.1
* Among men living in suburban metropolitan areas, 3.2 to 2.1; the number of sexual partners remained the same among men in city-center areas, 2.6
* Among white men, 3.0 to 2.5; among black men, 2.4 to 1.9
* In 2002, 57% of men had not used a condom the last time they had sex, compared to 58% in 2006-10
* Among MSM who also have sex with women, 46% had not used a condom the last time they had vaginal sex in 2002, compared to 67% by 2010
* MSM who had had female partners also decreased from 38% to 25%
* Fewer men reported transactional sex (sex for money or drugs), down from 15% to 3%
* Fewer men said they had injected drugs or had had sex with someone who had injected drugs, down from 12% to 5%
* In 2002 and 2006-10, 41% of men said they had had an HIV test in the last year; 38% reported having an STI check-up in 2002 and 39% in 2006-10.
* The proportion of men who had never had an HIV test fell from 25 to 15%.
Researchers claim “gay men appear to have taken steps that could reduce their HIV risk by using a method that has received little emphasis in HIV prevention programmes for gay men – reducing their number of partners – while not increasing condom use, which has received the most emphasis.”
However, HIV prevalence and the incidence of STIs increased in gay men despite the decrease in numbers of partners and other sexual risk behaviors indicate the influence of “network factors,” particularly among young black gay men. According to the study:
Factors about partners that are not captured by the individual risk behavior focus of most studies. For instance, some studies have found that black gay men tend to restrict sex to partners of their own ethnicity and are also more likely to have sex with men a number of years older or younger than themselves. Both of these would tend to concentrate HIV infection within the black gay community.
Meanwhile, one factor that could explain the pruding-up/settling down of MSM America could be the legalization of same-sex marriage. Massachusetts became the first state to adopt gay marriage one year after the first set of data was collected.
