Politicians support first openly gay NBA player

President Obama expressed his support for Jason Collins after the NBA player publicly came out yesterday. After the article of Collins discussing his orientation in a first-person essay for Sports Illustrated hit the internet, President Obama personally called to congratulate him saying he was impressed by his courage and “couldn’t be prouder.”
“One of the extraordinary measures of progress we’ve seen in this country is the recognition that the LGBT community deserves full equality, not just partial equality, not just tolerance but a recognition that they’re fully part of the American family,” Obama said in a press conference this morning.
“I think for a lot of young people out there who are gay or lesbian and struggling with these issues to see a role model like that who is unafraid is a great thing.”
The First Lady also expressed her support for Collins.
"So proud of you, Jason Collins! This is a huge step forward for our country,” tweeted First Lady Michelle Obama. “We've got your back!''
Other politicians and LGBT advocates expressed their support as well.

NBA STAR BECOMES FIRST OPENLY GAY PLAYER IN MAJOR LEAGUE SPORTS

The basketball center came out in a moving commentary in the most recent issue of Sports Illustrated.

"I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay." So begins the historic coming out essay from NBA center Jason Collins, which appears in the May 6th issue ofSports Illustrated. Collins, who is currently with the Washington Wizards, began his basketball career in high school (actor Jason Segal was reportedly his backup) and later at Stanford, and he has played for New Jersey Nets (taking the team to finals), Mephis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, and Boston Celtics before being traded to the Wizards earlier this year.
Collins says he didn't set out to be the first out gay athlete playing in a major team sport, "but since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, 'I'm different.' If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand."
The starting center wrote, "My journey of self-discovery and self-acknowledgement began in my hometown of Los Angeles and has taken me through two state high school championships, the NCAA Final Four and the Elite Eight, and nine playoffs in 12 NBA seasons. I've played for six pro teams and have appeared in two NBA Finals. Ever heard of a parlor game called Three Degrees of Jason Collins? If you're in the league, and I haven't been your teammate, I surely have been one of your teammates' teammates. Or one of your teammates' teammates' teammates. Now I'm a free agent, literally and figuratively. I've reached that enviable state in life in which I can do pretty much what I want. And what I want is to continue to play basketball. I still love the game, and I still have something to offer. My coaches and teammates recognize that. At the same time, I want to be genuine and authentic and truthful."
In the essay, Collins talks about dating women, his decision to come out,  how his family reacted, ignoring his "censor button," and being inspired to live truthfully by the recent Boston Marathon bombing. "I'm glad I can stop hiding and refocus on my 13th NBA season," he writes. "Some people insist they've never met a gay person. But Three Degrees of Jason Collins dictates that no NBA player can claim that anymore. Pro basketball is a family. And pretty much every family I know has a brother, sister, or cousin who's gay. In the brotherhood of the NBA, I just happen to be the one who's out."
He also proudly proclaims he'll be marching in June's LGBT Pride parade.

ScienceShot: Heavy Stubble Makes Men More Attractive

Men may now think twice about reaching for a razor. A new study shows that facial hair says a lot about a man and that attractiveness peaks at the "heavy stubble" phase. Researchers photographed 10 men at four stages of beard growth: clean shaven, 5-day "light" stubble, 10-day "heavy" stubble (shown), and fully bearded. Three hundred and fifty-one women and 177 heterosexual men viewed the photos and rated each face for attractiveness, masculinity, health, and parenting ability. Women ranked heavily stubbled faces as the most attractive. Participants said that the clean-shaven men looked about as healthy and attractive as those with a full beard, but rated the bearded men higher for perceived parenting skills. Light stubble got the short end of the stick, garnering low scores across the board from both men and women. The 5-day growth may be too patchy, the researchers write in the May issue of Evolution and Human Behavior, which suggests "a threshold of density and distribution may be necessary for beards to function as an attractive signal." Stubble conveys maturity and manliness, they write, with less of the macho aggressiveness implied by a full beard. See Source

Happy Earth Day 4.22.13

Earth Day: The History of A Movement

Each year, Earth Day -- April 22 -- marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
The height of hippie and flower-child culture in the United States, 1970 brought the death of Jimi Hendrix, the last Beatles album, and Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. Protest was the order of the day, but saving the planet was not the cause. War raged in Vietnam, and students nationwide increasingly opposed it.
At the time, Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. “Environment” was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news.  Although mainstream America remained oblivious to environmental concerns, the stage had been set for change by the publication of Rachel Carson's New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962.  The book represented a watershed moment for the modern environmental movement, selling more than 500,000 copies in 24 countries and, up until that moment, more than any other person, Ms. Carson raised public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and public health.
Earth Day 1970 capitalized on the emerging consciousness, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns front and center.
